Description

Nimesulide is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that inhibits COX-2. Nimesulide exhibits anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic, and anticancer activities. Nimesulide is clinically used to treat arthritis, acute pain, and dysmenorrhea. In hypopharyngeal carcinoma cells, nimesulide decreases cell viability, increases apoptosis, downregulates expression of survivin, COX-2, and Bcl-2, and upregulates expression of caspase 3 and Bax. In vitro under inflammatory conditions, this compound decreases activity of PKC and release of substance P and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2).
