Description

Baicalin is a flavone found in Scutellaria that exhibits antiviral, antioxidative, antihypertensive, cardioprotective, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer chemotherapeutic activities. Baicalin inhibits prolyl oligopeptidase. Baicalin also inhibits neuraminidase, preventing influenza infection. In animal models of hypoxia-induced pulmonary arterial hypertension, baicalin decreases systolic blood pressure, inhibits ventricular remodeling, and suppresses proliferation of pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells. In animal models of cerebral hemorrhage, baicalin decreases development of edema and suppresses expression of matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP9), IL-6, and IL-1β. Additionally, baicalin inhibits UV-induced skin aging responses in fibroblasts and inhibits cell and tumor growth in models of acute myelogenous leukemia (AML).
