Description

Gemfibrozil is a fibrate that exhibits anti-hyperlipidemic and antibacterial activities. Gemfibrozil activates PPARα, increasing synthesis of lipoprotein lipase, which results in decreases in serum total cholesterol, VLDL, LDL, and triglyceride levels and increases in serum HDL levels and ApoA expression. In vitro, gemfibrozil also inhibits enoyl-CoA reductase, preventing fatty acid synthesis and suppressing growth in species of Legionella and Mycobacterium.
