Description

Mifepristone is a synthetic steroid that exhibits abortifacient, contraceptive, neuroprotective, cognition enhancing, and antidepressant activities. Mifepristone inhibits the glucocorticoid receptor and progesterone receptor; it prevents ovulation and induces endometrial decidual degeneration. In vitro, mifepristone protects hippocampal cultures against oxidative stress and cell death induced by amyloid-β (Aβ), glutamate, and H2O2, suggesting potential benefit in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. Mifepristone also improves cognitive function, working memory, and spatial memory and improve symptoms of depression in clinical settings.
