Description

Streptomycin is an aminoglycoside originally produced by Streptomyces; it was one of the first antibiotics discovered. Streptomycin exhibits antibacterial and anti-parasitic activities, binding 16S rRNA of the 30S bacterial ribosome and inhibiting formyl-methionyl-tRNA binding; this prevents the formation of the initiation complex. Streptomycin was originally used to treat tuberculosis, but has since been used in veterinary medicine to treat gram negative bacterial infection. Streptomycin is also used as a pesticide and fungicide Streptomycin inhibits mammalian RNA splicing as well.
