Description
Propanolol hydrochloride is a nonselective β1/2-adrenergic receptor antagonist that exhibits anti-arrhythmic and antihypertensive properties. Propanolol is most often used to decrease blood pressure and heart rate. Additionally, the β-adrenergic receptor blockade modulates catecholamine levels and increases protein synthesis, resulting in the ability of propranolol to attenuate wound healing-induced hypermetabolic responses during burn treatment. Propanolol also displays benefit as an anti-migraine prophylactic, inhibiting the cortical spreading during depression that may be responsible for migraines.
