Description
Torsemide is a pyridine-sulfonyl urea loop diuretic known for its antihypertensive and cardioprotective activities. This compound acts as a competitive inhibitor of the Na+-K+-2Cl- symporter in the loop of Henle by binding directly to the Cl- binding site; this inhibition prevents reabsorption of Na+, Cl-, Mg2+, and Ca2+, resulting in a decrease in blood volume and pressure. Torsemide treats edema, hypertension, and congestive heart failure, attenuating left ventricular cardiac remodeling. This compound also inhibits aldosterone secretion and ATPase activity of HSP90.
