Desvenlafaxine is an active metabolite of venlafaxine, displaying neuromodulatory and antidepressant activities through its inhibition of serotonin and norepinephrine transporters (SERT, NET). Due to its modulation of serotonin levels, desvenlafaxine alters rates of gastric emptying; tolerance to this effect develops quickly during chronic administration. This compound is also in clinical trials as a potential treatment for menopausal hot flashes.
