Description
Oleuropein is a bioactive compound found in all parts of the olive tree. Oleuropein has been shown to reduce intracellular ROS generation, inhibit apoptosis, stabilize mitochondrial membrane potential, modulate apoptotic proteins, and increase phosphorylation of Akt and ERK1/2 in neonatal rat cardiomyocytes subjected to simulation of ischemia/reperfusion. Additionally, oleuropein has been found to decrease COX-2 expression, suppress IL-17 in mucosa and supernatant, and attenuate inflammatory damage in colonic biopsy cultures or samples of ulcerative colitis. Furthermore, oleuropein was found to significantly increase radiosensitivity of nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells by reducing expression of HIF1alpha, in addition to altering expressions of miRNAs and genes.
