Description

Pregnenolone is the endogenous precursor to all steroid hormones; it exhibits neuromodulatory, cognition enhancing, and antipsychotic activities. Pregnenolone decreases the negative symptoms of schizophrenia and increases attention and working memory performance in schizophrenic subjects. Pregnenolone sulfate acts as a positive allosteric NMDA receptor potentiator and a negative allosteric GABA-A receptor potentiator. Additionally, pregnenolone sulfate activates transient receptor potential melanostatin (TRPM3) channels, increasing Ca2+ influx and insulin secretion in islet cells.
