Description

Acepromazine is a phenothiazine derivative antipsychotic agent related to chlorpromazine. Acepromazine maleate is primarily used in veterinary field as a sedative and antiemetic, although it has previously been used as an antipsychotic in humans. Acepromazine acts as an antagonist at D1/2 and 5-HT1A/2A receptors; it prevents sudden cardiac death in animal models of status epilepticus and reduces vasopressor activity of dopamine during anesthesia. Acepromazine may also inhibit ABCG2, a transport protein whose overexpression in tumors is associated with drug resistance.
