Levonorgestrel is a synthetic progestogen that exhibits contraceptive activity, inhibiting secretion of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). Levonorgestrel is clinically used in hormonal contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy. In vitro, levonorgestrel increases expression of 17-β hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase.
