Description
Phellodendrine is a quaternary base alkaloid found in the bark of Phellodendron. Phellodendrine exhibits immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory activities. Phellodendrine inhibits local semisyngenic and allogenic graft-versus-host (GVH) reactions and suppresses the induction of delayed-type hypersensitivity reactions without affecting the overall antibody response in animal models. Additionally, phellodendrine decreases urinary protein, plasma creatine, and plasma cholesterol levels in animal models of crescentic-type antiGBM nephritis, inhibiting crescent formation, adhesion, and fibrinoid necrosis in glomeruli; this compound also prevents nephritis-induced increases in immune cells and cytokines.
