Description
Shikimic acid is one of the bioactive components of coconut water and can be found in various plants and microorganisms. Shikimic acid exhibits antioxidative and antinociceptive activities on its own, although derivatives display anti-inflammatory benefits as well. In hepatocytes, shikimic acid prevents H2O2-induced increases in ROS levels and DNA damage and activates Nrf2 signaling to increase glutathione and superoxide dismutase levels. Additionally, this compound inhibits chemically-induced writhing in animal models of pain.
