Description

Nicergoline is an ergot derivative from the fungi genus Claviceps. Nicergoline exhibits anti-atherosclerotic and antithrombotic activity, used to treat vascular disorders including thrombosis, atherosclerosis, Reynaud’s disease, and retinopathy. This compound acts as an α1-adrenergic receptor inhibitor and also inhibits platelet aggregation. Additionally, nicergoline shows neuroprotective benefit, increasing glutamate uptake and levels of BDNF and substance P in the brain. Nicergoline also decreases levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β.
