Description
Tanshinone IIA is found in Salvia and exhibits anticoagulant, neuroprotective, cognition enhancing, anti-atherosclerotic, and anticancer chemotherapeutic activities. Tanshinone IIA inhibits platelet aggregation, increasing bleeding time in vivo. Tanshinone IIA also decreases TNF-α-induced expression of VCAM-1 and ICAM-1 in vitro. In animal models of Alzheimer’s disease, tanshinone IIA decreases learning and memory deficits and suppresses expression of iNOS and matric metalloproteinase 2 (MMP2). In glioblastoma cells, this compound induces apoptosis and downregulates expression of STAT3 and IL-6; it also inhibits breast cancer tumor growth in animal models. Tanshinone IIA inhibits monoacylglycerol lipase (MAGL).
