Imipenem is a β-lactam carbapenem antimicrobial. Imipenem exhibits broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against both gram positive and gram negative bacteria; it is especially active against Pseudomonas aeruginosa as well as species of Enterococcus. Like other β-lactam antibiotics, imipenem prevents bacterial cell wall synthesis by inhibiting penicillin binding proteins.
